Background
Information is a vital resource that is as fundamental as energy, time, money, land and labour. Information is now an expensive commodity; it has a competitive and strategic value. This is a new concept that is rapidly gaining ground. However, despite this developing awareness, it is evident that it has not been universally recognized as such with the result that in some places it was unconsciously collected and organized and distributed and in others it is largely unharnessed, and unexplored.
The lack of integration and coordination in terms of information resources within and among institutions is among the factors that had hampered the information seeking activities in particular research activities. This has created unnecessary barriers to access the vital information resources. The absence of national integration of information and full recognition towards the value of these valuable resources is another factor that needs to be addressed.
Information centers such as libraries, archives and record centers are not fully developed to be the champion in safeguarding the national and organizational information heritage nor have they been fully recognized and appreciated as an important institution that can help organizations to achieve its goals and desired efficiency. Exclusivity and uncoordinated nature of the information resource coupled with technological deficiencies in some organizations have made it difficult to achieve desirable information systems that are able to cater for the needs of the organization and nation as a whole. Is the integration of the resources an answer to the problems for our information deficiency or are current technological advances allowing us to share the resources? Hence this conference is aimed at achieving the following:
